Entry deadline Friday for Uptown's Hockey 4 the Hospitals
September 15, 2011
Victoria, BC September 13, 2011 (www.shopuptown.ca) Uptown’s Town Plaza transforms into a bustling street hockey arena on Saturday, September 17, as members of the Victoria Royals WHL team join local kids and minor and adult teams for Hockey 4 the Hospitals, a community fundraiser for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation. Hockey enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate by signing up by Friday at shopuptown.ca.
The event begins with a pancake breakfast with the Victoria Royals. Then teams battle 4-on-4 for the Hockey 4 the Hospitals title. Throughout the day, players from the Royals will sign autographs. Live music, children’s crafts and Future Shop’s video gaming station, showcasing the new NFL game, will round out the festivities.
“The whole idea of Uptown’s Town Plaza is to create a lively, modern-day gathering place where community comes first,” says Uptown General Manager Roberta Ferguson. “Hockey 4 the Hospitals doubly supports this community commitment; it’s both a fun neighbourhood event and a fundraiser for one of Greater Victoria’s most valued organizations. And it’s just one of the many varied activities we’ll be inviting Victorians to enjoy in the weeks, months and years to come.”
As a lead-up to the September 17 event, Uptown hosted local personalities in a September 10 celebrity tournament. On behalf of Mayor Frank Leonard’s winning team, The Watch Dogs, Uptown made a $1,000 donation to the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.
Uptown’s Town Plaza – the site of the September 17 tournament – is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2012. When finished, it will boast rooftop restaurants, water features and lush landscaping and will be in regular, year-round use as a venue for community events, concerts and exhibitions.
